Charles Breithaupt

Charles Breithaupt, Ed.D. was named Executive Director of the Texas University Interscholastic League in January 2009 and was appointed Associate Vice President for the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement at the University of Texas at Austin in February 2011. He has served the UIL since 1992. He oversees the academic, music, and athletic competition for more than 1,400 high schools, 1,600 middle schools, and 2,000 elementary schools in the state of Texas.

Breithaupt coached for 17 years prior to joining the League. His 1991 team won the 3A state championship, and he was named TABC Coach of the Year. His overall record in 14 years was 392-92, and each of his teams participated in a playoff game. He took two teams to the state tournament and won the state championship in 1991 with a 37-1 record. His 1992 team set numerous national and state records and nished 35-2. He was inducted into the Southeast Texas Coaches Hall of Honor in 2001 and the Texas Basketball Hall of Fame in 2003. He was inducted in the Texas High School Coaches Hall of Honor in 2005 and was inducted into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame in 2014.

Breithaupt has served on several national committees including the National Federation of State High School Associations Sportsmanship, Ethics, and Integrity Committee and the NFHS Basketball Rules Committee. He served as liaison to the NCAA Football Rules Committee for 14 years and as a member of the NHFS Board of Directors. He recently served as Chair of the Texas Basketball Hall of Fame. He is currently a member of the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame Board of Directors and the National Football Foundation.

A graduate of Buna High School, Breithaupt received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Lamar University in Beaumont, and he completed his doctorate at the University of Texas at Austin in July 1996. Charles and his wife Debbie have been married since 1977, currently reside in Georgetown, Texas, and are members of First Baptist Church. They have one daughter and two granddaughters, Reagan and Bristol.
