Steve Savarese

Steve Savarese is the executive director designee of the Alabama High School Athletic Association, a position he will assume on August 1, 2007. One of the most respected coaches and teachers in the history of Alabama interscholastic athletics, Saverese began his coaching career with a seven-year stint as head football coach at Douglass (KS) High School, before returning to Alabama. He then served as head coach and athletic director at Ensley (three years), Benjamin Russell (twelve years), Daphne (seven years), and McGill-Toolen (three years). He also served as assistant principal for several of those years and was voted “Outstanding Teacher” at every school where he was employed. Before leaving McGill-Toolen, Saverese was the winningest active football coach in Alabama with an overall 286-80 record. His Daphne team won the Class 6A state football championship in 2001 and finished runner-up in 2000 and 2003.
