Steve Barnes

Steve Barnes is the associate head coach of the men’s basketball team at Southern Mississippi University, a position he accepted in 2006. Before that, he served in the same position at Iowa State. From 1999-2002, he was the head men’s basketball coach at San Jose State University for three seasons, where he led the Spartans to their first back-to-back .500 seasons since the mid-1980s. A graduate of Azusa Pacific University, he started coaching basketball in 1978 at the interscholastic level. In 1981, he began his collegiate coaching career when he accepted a job as an assistant coach at his alma mater. He has also held assistant coaching positions at Saddleback Junior College, Cal Poly–San Luis Obispo, Idaho, Cal State–Bakersfield, and Utah State. He is widely regarded as an exceptional teacher and a tireless recruiter.
