Matt Doherty

Matt Doherty is the head men’s basketball coach at Southern Methodist University, a position he assumed in 2006. Prior to coming to SMU, Doherty spent one year as the head men’s basketball coach at Florida Atlantic University and three seasons at the helm of one of the nation’s most storied programs—The University of North Carolina. A 1984 graduate of UNC, Doherty played at Carolina under legendary coach Dean Smith, the winningest coach in Division I history. As a player, he finished among the Tar Heels career leaders in scoring, free-throw percentage, and assists. In 1988, Doherty began his coaching career when he worked with an AAU team in Charlotte, North Carolina. He then spent three seasons as an assistant at Davidson (1989-1992), before moving on to Kansas, where he spent seven seasons as an assistant to renowned coach Roy Williams (1993-1999). He then spent one season as the head coach at Notre Dame, where he led the Irish to a 22-15 record, before moving on to UNC.
