Tim Nunez

Tim Nunez is a 32-year veteran of collegiate coaching. Over his career, Nunez has coached at the University of Texas, Marshall University, Southwest Texas Sate, Tulane University, and Texas A&M. Coach Nunez’s career highlights include a five-year stint as offensive line coach at the University of Texas, where he directed an offensive line that featured an outland trophy finalist, seven All-Americans, and six first-team All-Big 12 performers. Nunez’s line helped the Longhorns offense become only the second offense in NCAA history to feature a 2,000-yard passer and rusher to go along with a 1,000-yard receiver in 1998. The University of Texas offense was one of only four units nationally (first in school history) to feature a 3,000-yard passer, a 1,000-yard receiver, and a 1,000-yard rusher in 1999. Nunez’s unit also has cleared room for 16 200-yard rushing games, including a 434-yard rushing effort against Rice in 1998 and a 396-yard ground game at Kansas in 2000. In 1998, Nunez directed a group of seniors to one of the most productive seasons on record at the University of Texas. Prior to Texas, Nunez coordinated an explosive offense at Marshall during the 1997 season. Under his guidance, Marshall’s offense ranked fifth nationally in scoring (37.8 points per game), seventh in passing (307.3 yard per game), and tenth in total offense (444.9 yards per game) as the Thundering Herd won the Mid-American Conference championship. Marshall wide receiver Randy Moss and quarterback Chad Pennington flourished in Nunez’s system in 1997. Moss set an NCAA record for touchdown catches in a season (25) and went on to earn first-team All-American honors. He also finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy balloting. Meanwhile, Pennington led the nation and set the NCAA sophomore record for touchdown passes (39) that season. A 32-year coaching veteran, Nunez tutored an offensive line that had all of its starters named to the All-Southern Conference team, and helped Marshall claim the Division I-AA national championship in 1996. Before Marshall, Nunez had coaching stints at Southwest Texas State and Tulane. He served as the Bobcats’ assistant head coach/offensive coordinator from 1992–95 and helped SWT lead the Southland Conference in rushing offense in 1992. At Tulane, Nunez guided the Green Wave’s wide receivers from 1988–91 and the secondary/defensive ends from 1984–86. Nunez attended Louisiana Tech from 1967–68 before going on to earn a degree in health and physical education from Lamar University in 1970. He then earned his Master’s in education from Lamar University in 1974. Tim and Ellen Nunez have five children: Dwayne, Jake, Jame, Mark, and Lori.
